Starts tomorrow...has anyone gone on opening night? Is it as crowded as the weekends? We have some people in town and our options are tomorrow night, Friday or Saturday during the day.

Trying to figure out if tomorrow will be fine to go.

Crowds peak on both of the weekends (including Fridays) and on weekend evenings it's the most packed it'll be. If you have the option of going during the day I'd definitely do that. It'll be crowded but not as much as at night.

Tomorrow night just so you know is technically "Preview Day". This means that 100% of the exhibits, rides, food, etc. might not be all open and operating. However, you do pay a discounted price and depending on what you're looking to do it might not be an issue. Check out the State Fair website for more info about what exactly is/isn't to be expected that day. I've never been on Preview Day so I can't say about the crowds.

Fridays are bad, Saturdays are worse. The fair opens at 8 am but exhibits and rides don't open until 9. Suggest you get there at 8:30 and stroll around. Or get there at 8 and find something to eat for breakfast until 9. By the time the place gets hectic at 11:30, you will have seen much of it.

Considering that I'm supposed to be in Goldsboro this Saturday, does this mean I should avoid my planned NC-86/I-40/US-70 route and use my backup NC-86/I-85/US-70/I-540/US-264/I-795 route?

On the final day, if you aren't already parked by 2pm, I wouldn't even bother. I rode past on my bike in the late afternoon. All roads within a mile of the parking lots were bumper-to-bumper and not moving.

Never been to the fair. From these responses, it looks like we should go on a weeknight.

Are the fireworks worth waiting around for? The claustrophobic in me doesn't relish the inevitable traffic jam of everyone leaving at the same time.

The entire fair is a claustrophobia nightmare. You've been warned.

Go on a rainy day. More of a drizzle than a downpour type of rain. That will keep people from pushing a stroller over your feet.

apparently there's a concert tonight at PNC Arena (Bruno Mars). That + opening night = don't go to the fair tonight
