Theres jobs of all types- but competition is tough!!!!
It is probably more expensive than Louisiana. Housing is more affordable in the outlying areas, but then you'll have a higher gas bill to pay due to the commute. I would NOT move here without a job lined up first! |

What job skills do you have? Not too many entry level jobs here because of illegal immigrants, but good jobs in medical and technical fields. |

I've lived here my whole life, and have never heard of any oil rigs off our coasts. Doesn't mean they aren't there, but I've sure never heard about it! constructiuon, maybe...but the mexicans pretty much have that monopolized. Unless you're highly skilled, pay is not that great. Plus, housing has slowed. NOt sure how commercial is doing, but I am pretty sure that is slowing as well. I'm not going to lie and say come and see for yourself, itll be great- because it sounds as though you would have a hard time finding work that pays enough to support a family. Maybe look into areas along the gulf towards texas- you may have better luck finding work with one of the oil companies, and be in a nicer area... HAve you asked your employer about a transfer? maybe they have other locations that might be of interest? I would hate to see you move your family and have an even harder time making ends meet |

There definitely aren't any oil rigs off the coast of NC...or anywhere along the east coast for that matter I believe. With no college degree it is going to be hard to find a job anywhere, but especially in the triangle. It is a very white-collar more upper-middle class area. There are other areas of NC that would have a lower cost of living and more blue collor oriented; but the job market in those areas isn't exactly great and I'm afraid you would likely end up feeling the same way you do about your hometown. I wouldn't say construction is COMPLETLEY monopolized by hispanic immigrants, but that sounds like it would be your only major option and it would be competitive.

With the need for oil, you'd probably be better doing what you do now.
Could you possibly get in with a refinery? Maybe Texas might be better for you. The benefits should be good with a major. I once worked for Exxon-Mobil in IT and had decent benefits & salary. |
