I've seen a lot but I feel like the problem is in no way bad enough that it should keep someone from moving here. If you move to a wooded area near a creek and have a backyard or need to walk a dog in the evening, you'll want to look for them, but that doesn't HAVE to be your situation.
Part of the problem is our growth. So many new neighborhoods and shopping centers being built, snakes are having to leave their natural habitat. Well, that is my opinion!
I've been here for well over 40 years and have only seen garden snakes and they were very small.
But...I don't hang out in the woods either! I'm sure if you go looking, you WILL find them!
Having said that...I have a client that moved to Creedmoor (from NY). She has been here about 2 months and thus far has seen black widow spiders, many different snakes and a coyote! I should add that they are building houses all around her and the area is very wooded! Or...animals just seek her out!!!
Yes, we have snakes here. That said, the chances of being bitten are quite small (despite what news you may hear). I've had a few close calls but they involved being out late in the evening near the pond on my property.
Really thought NC would be a ideal choice for me but not liking all these snake bite news coming out. I am very scared of snakes !
I am too. I moved here 4 years ago, and to be quite honest, it hasn't been a concern or problem. I've seen two copperheads at different times on the roads in our neighborhood. I've also run across one in one of my mulch bed, under a grassy plant. But I gotta say that I'm no longer scared of them They are indeed scared of humans, and will not bother you unless you pretty much step on or very near one.
I see the large black snakes all the time, but then again, I do a lot of walking and bike riding in the woods. I've only seen one copperhead in 10 years, and it was on a wooded trail. My kids passed within a foot of it and didn't even see it. I was last in line and saw it on the edge of the trail.
Best not move to any place with trees lest one of those bad boys falls on you!
