"Stranger Things" is a hugely successful show created by natives of Durham, but alas, filmed in Georgia. Thanks McCrory and the NCGA.

Stranger Things 2, second season from Duffer Brothers, is on Netflix | News & Observer

As they look to hopefully two more seasons, the possibility is raised about filming in their Durham hometown – instead of its current Atlanta location.

“It really comes down to the incentives,” Ross Duffer said. “That’s why people are drawn to Atlanta. So, I would love to come back to North Carolina, but it all has to deal with in terms of just the tax breaks and stuff, really.

“But, you know, it would be a dream to come back one day and shoot there.”

Why should the taxpayer subsidize throwing gobs of money at an industry that creates no consistent economic base and only exists to chase the lowest bidder?

Why not spend money on business that place signifigant infrastructure in the state and have incentives to stay and be good partners

That would be great for the area in terms of tourism and visability, could be a "Portlandia" moment here. That show put Portland on the map.

I've never seen nor heard of Portlandia, yet I know where Portland is and have indeed visited there.

IMO, incentives should always be used when they are a net positive. From what I've seen, the film incentives created more tax dollars than they took.

EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, used to be "Hollywood South", but when those generous tax credits expired at the end of 2014, the movie industry set sail out of NC! Although they didn't go too far, now Georgia/Atlanta is the new "Hollywood South".

I just don't see the movie industry coming back to NC, like it once was, even with better tax incentives, with Georgia having their own EUE/Screen Gems Studios and Pinewood Studios and possibly another large studio complex by CineDome Studios Inc. in southern GA, it's going to be hard to compete.

It sets a bad precedent, because then companies expect it. The tax rates should be set accordingly so they are competitive, not picking and choosing winners.

Portlandia is hilarious - it's a bunch of sketch comedy skits that stereotype the "hipsters" that live there.

Except that without incentives, you aren't competitive. One city or state can't alone can't stop offering incentives; incentives can only be stopped if everyone stops them, perhaps via some sort of federal legislation. And that would be very difficult, if not impossible, to structure and enforce.

How would filming this in Durham be beneficial for us? I love the show and it would be cool to have it filmed locally. I'm not sure I understand what benefits it provides us to dish out incentives. How do the incentives affect taxpayers? It's hard to make an argument either way without the facts.
