My guess is that it closed down around 1998 or 1999. I've driven past there everyday since 1995.

Sounds about right.
I got here in 1997, and was only in once.

Old time hardware. All I recall is that they had aerated open tubs of minnows for fish bait.

Probably a lot like the little general hardware store I grew up with - I wish I was around to see it open.

It's been there with the same family (Carpenters) for over 130 years. It's like stepping back in time. The have a very interesting book showing the history of Carpenter throughout they years.

I was there once and there was cat poop throughout the store on the floor and on the very dusty shelves. It was gross and very disappointing because I love old timy hardware stores.
