OP didn't ask for this, but for the benefit of anyone who stumbles on this thread in the future and can benefit from this knowledge ... Sugar Buzz Bakery in Cary has AMAZING gluten free cakes. I swear, I like them more than any of the the non-GF cakes I used to eat before going GF.
This thread came at the perfect time for me. Celebrating a family birthday this week and just ordered a cake from one of the suggested bakeries! Thanks!
People will call me crazy (I would, if I didn't have first hand experience), but Publix made a huge cake for a special event at my work, and people were falling all over themselves. I had to pry it out of the person who bought it, as everyone thought they had a secret baker on retainer.
If you wanted buttercream I would say Publix. I don't know how they do it, but their buttercream is the best ever -- light, fluffy, delicious. And the cakes are pretty good too.
Not to hijack this thread, but whay about a good homemade pie? I'm supposed to bring a pecan pie to work on Tuesday for a potluck. Places where I can good a good fresh pie on Monday afternoon/evening without preplacing an order?

If budget is not a big limiting factor then Scratch Baking in Durham. I cost is a factor, Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.

Yes, people do rave about their buttercream.
