20 years ago were were a moderate to conservative Democrat-controlled state. If all the transplants (you've said NE, I'd say from anywhere) are voting for right-wing demagogues, then who's voting for the left-wingers who keep getting elected?
I dunno, but the right wing seems to be in charge of the GA at the moment.
You are correct that this used to be a moderate-to-conservative state 20 years ago. We also had more Dixiecrats floating about, and they're hardly radical leftists.

I don’t feel it’s correct to blame the republican takeover on transplants. NC was essentially a 1 party state for the longest time I can recall in my rural nc county all the biggest conservatives of your life were registered Democrats but that whole conservative Democrat archetype is gone
Easley was embroiled in scandal
Purdue was shrouded in it
The basnight conviction
The national republican wave in 2010
Anyway point being it’s really simplistic to blame the republican takeover on transplants
I do believe the wake school board stuff is a good example of meddling transplant politics but that’s trying to transport a district model more like the north east instead of democratic / republican issues

I don't think anyone is blaming the republican takeover entirely on transplants. But it is undeniable that it is a factor.
Me as well. You don't sound like a "hipster," so you should be able to avoid the wrath of the rogue poster.
And as far as the main cities listed in this forum (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary), the fact that you're from the North much more likely will prompt follow-up questions and conversation from people you encounter rather than disdain.
Hipster? Nah, I'm a retiree, LOL. I'm from Michigan and the midwest is pretty laid back in general. Just too much snow!

Yeah, it also doesn't make sense that all these Republicans from the Northeast would be escaping the liberal politics of the states they left and then try to recreate the same environment here, which is what a lot of transplants get accused of.
I would love to see stats, if they exist, on who transplants are politically, economically, ethnically, etc. Don't know that if that kind of information is collected, though.
Been here a few years now and have not experienced any hostility or bias toward Northerners or outsiders.
I haven't read all responses but surely someone has shared the CARY acronym. But, honestly, seems like half the people I meet aren't from NC. With 3 major universities plus, other smaller colleges in the area, it's not surprising that people just stayed.
On top of that, the tech and medical companies & low(er) cost of living has attracted many transplants.
We love it here. I've lived in many US cities, and this ranks 2nd, behind San Diego and above places such as Miami and Denver. The people here are fantastic and hospitable.
