I'm interested in the history behind the naming of many of the local Raleigh roads. The names themselves and how it came about (Leesville Rd, Strickland, Creedmoor, Ray, etc)

I believe there was a link on here but I was unable to locate it.

The names you mentioned are simply family names in the area.

For Cary,

High House Road: There was a house high above the two lane dirt road
Indian Wells: There were Indian wells there, I once heard. But I couldn't verify that.

The town of Creedmoor was allegedly named for a person (https://www.fmrealty.com/site/creedmoor-a-brief-history). Leesville has long been a placename in Wake County -- officially, it's Leesville Township -- and was likely named directly or indirectly for someone named Lee (I wonder who that might be). Strickland, Ray, and Lynn are family names in north Wake County that go back 150+ years.

Jesse Jones Sausage Co. opened a plant out there back in the 1920's or 1930's. Story is that named the road after it. I think Con-Agra is at that location now..or was until the explosion and fire.

Down in my area of southern Wake county, the roads seem to have been named after the family farms that were nearby.

Is there an existing database online with that exact kind if info for general browsing? Thank you for those. I'm also interested in when they were first laid down, age etc.

Ray Rd? Lynn/Lake Lynn

Read the thread. Ray and Lynn are longstanding family names in north Wake.

No database that I know of. Many of these roads go back 100+ years, although they weren't formally named back then.

Map of Wake County (Fendol Bevers) :: North Carolina Maps

For example, Strickland Road in north Raleigh is clearly seen on this 1871 map. Lake Lynn, named for the family, was already there and had a mill on it.

I believe Lake Lynn was built in the 1970's for flood control. Several mill sites did exist in the general area along the creeks dating back to the 1800's. I know several of the descendants of the Lynn Family. Some still live in the subdivisions around Lynn Rd.

Was that the old farmhouse that used to sit on a hill at the intersection of High House and Davis Drive? I hated seeing that whole farm go in order to make way for the shops and senior development now occupying the land there.
