I think Jason outlined the differences pretty well. If you're set on NC you might check out Charlotte, too. Raleigh and Charlotte are more alike than they are different, but they are a little bit different. Charlotte has some high end shopping places that Raleigh does not and bigger skyscrapers and more pro sports and less of a focus on advanced degrees.

As a compromise between what you want, and what she wants, I would suggest Atlanta, GA.

It is a major city with all the trappings, including the traffic, but it will seem calm coming from LA.

The cost of living is probably half of LA, or less. Houses are huge. Space is not a problem.

It's also convenient for travel, as the airport there is a regional hub for domestic and international flights.

Atlanta is crazy expensive too. However the traffic is similar to LA so you might feel right at home.

If you really want to move out of LA find out where people from your native land tend to gather together and search for work there. Your wife will be more comfortable in that environment.

Moved to the Triangle from Atlanta. Apples to Apples Atlanta was far cheaper.

It was a heck of a blow when we moved here, seeing what houses we could get for the same price, and no basement

I will add to this ....

ask your wife to determine several places with a lower COL/higher QOL for the family that she WOULD consider.

I was born and raised in Atlanta, and my sister still lives there. Equivalent housing is definitely cheaper than the Triangle. But their version of "inside the beltline" pushes much further out that we don in the Triangle area.

I would suggest taking your family to North Carolina for vacation and check it out yourself. North Carolina is a beautiful state with the blue Ridge mountains, beautiful coastal beaches and Raleigh may not have high end shopping but they are upgrading downtown Raleigh and there are some nice stores there.

Having grown up in southern California I don't blame you for wanting to get out of Los Angeles, I hated having to drive there to visit relatives and I'm sure the traffic and cost of living is worse then when I lived in Orange County.
