from coastal and eastern weather Facebook page:

FINAL CALL MAP FOR JANUARY 17 WINTER STORM

Central NC to see moderate snowfall.

All of NC to see flakes!!

PICTURE:

This is our updated snowfall amounts. EVERY model shows at least 3 inches for Wake county and many show 4-5. Given that and the overall setup we are confident that totals will be a little higher than we thought last night.

MIXING??

Models have not shown as much rain to start the event across most of the area and most places should start as snow or BRIEFLY mix with rain.

COASTAL AREAS may see rain for a little longer but the end will be snow!

TIMING:

Central NC: The snow will slowly build into the Triangle between 4-6AM. Areas to the EAST of Raleigh will see snow start around 9AM

Eastern NC: Snow will be pushing into Pitt county around lunch time. COASTAL sections will see snow begin between 3 and 5PM.

Raleigh: 7-8AM

Greenville: 12-1PM

TRENDS:

This setup is one that in the past has over performed for Central NC. ALL models show 3-5 inches for Central NC. Another big clue is the snowfall amounts in western TN and Kentucky. These areas were forecasted by meteorologists to receive 1-3 inches and they got 8+.

All of these signs point toward a decent snow event across Central NC!!

STAY TUNED

Next update: 9PM (tentative)

Watch the radar closely over the next 12 hours. This storm will hit the mountains and scatter.

Storms out of the South bring frozen precipitation to this area. Storms out of the west bring disappointment.

I feel like they made a much bigger deal about the last storm, and we were supposed to get less snow.

No BOMB CYCLONE this time around to freak everyone out

I've been following the winter storm threads for years on the forum, and always remembered you saying your street stays icy and unplowed for a long time.
Yes, though I have to say they did a good job this last time. I was mystified by the sand spreading and then the removal of the top layer, but it turned out there was salt in there. It still stayed frozen for a while. I think last year's multiple accidents plus stranded UPS guy has the neighborhood back on Durham's radar.

the Y A K Trax are like tire chains for your shoes - good stuff.

As much as I'd love to sleep in and recover from this nasty cold tomorrow, I think myself and anyone else wishing for a snow day will be very disappointed in this forecast and how it plays out.

I hope you're right. But I'm going to put my money on the experts over the guy on City Data. No offense
