Hi--is anyone here a sub, or knows about subbing? I actually have a Ph.D. and 15 years teaching experience at the college level, but am not certified to teach in NC or anywhere else for that matter. I'm taking a leave (maybe permanent) from college level teaching (recent major medical issue made me rethink my life) and was interested in subbing in h.s. for English classes. Can one do that without a certificate?

Also, can one teach full time and get certified along the way? I know they do that in the past 2 states I've lived, but I didn't know about NC and could not for the life of my find the answers to my questions on the WCPSS site.

Thanks

Check out:
Teach4NC

It also has work4ncschools link, and includes sub positions.

I believe sub pay here in Johnston County is $60.00 per day. So if your in it for the money...its not much. In Jersey it was $105.00 per day.

If you are interested in actually teaching, look into NC's lateral entry program, which is designed for people without a teaching degree but with substantial experience in their field to teach while getting a license. A couple of warnings, though. Lateral entry is usually focused on "need areas", which is mostly math and science. If you are looking for a job, you need to be upfront about having a Ph.D., as it will probably make it harder for you to get a job. As sad as it is, some schools/districts don't like to hire Ph.D.'s because of the cost.

If you are looking for subbing to be like teaching, don't. I subbed for a couple of years before getting my license and teaching full time. Day-to-day subbing is not teaching. Some long term positions are close, but not like what you will have done at the college level.

Sorry this post turned out sort of negative. I hope you find what you are looking for!

I am a student and will be dual licensed in general education K-6 and special education K-12. I would like to sub to get the experience. During my December-January break and summer i am available to sub. Can someone tell me if this is possible to do without a license or certification, but have years of experience?!

It looks like all one needs to be a substitute is to have graduated from high school or equivalent (GED). See WCPSS: Substitute Teaching for more information.

Just remember, it's important to get certified.

It's 60 if you're not certified. $90 if you are. How sad that someone with a PhD has to be paid so pitifully.
