I'm interviewing for a couple of positions at Duke Med. Center and had a couple of questions -
How is the commute from Morrisville area?
How is parking, where do employees park?
Good 401K plan?
Thanks!!
Parking depends on the position. Worst case scenario a satellite lot on Hillsborough Rd...the one on Lasalle is a 5-10 min bus ride, and the one on Anderson is less than a 10 min walk. Most staff get put into this lot initially.
403b is outstanding. Pick from Vangaurd, Fidelity, TIAA-Cref or AIG (not recommended). Employer contribution is around 8% on the first 45K of salary and 13% on salary above that...you get the full contribution as long as you put in 3% of your salary.

The previous response answered things well. Parking is waitlisted except for the H lots which are usually a short bus ride. The only advantage to these is they're cheap. Unless you are a nobel prize winner or equivalent you will not get straight into the good lots!!
The drive is dependent on time. Leave at rush hour and it would take about 30 min to Morrisville. If you can leave before or after then 15 minutes is possible.
I don't qualify for 401K so can't answer that question.
Thanks to both respondents! Very helpful. I was afraid of the lot situation being just as you describe - guess I'll have to win a Nobel Prize and get a good spot (kidding of course)!! The 403b sounds great!
Will you be hourly or salaried? Only salaried (exempt) employees are eligible for a match with the 403b. Hourly employees are able to contribute their own money without a match, but are eligible for a pension with 5 years service. But if you are hourly and leave before 5 years you will not have received anything in retirement from Duke.
I'm pretty certain I'd be salaried but I'll know for sure when I interview on 4/17/07. We're leaving RI after our house closing on the 15th, driving straight to NC. Duke seems to have a lot of what I'm looking for. Thanks for yor help!

8% on the first 45K and 13% on the salary above that. Am I reading this right. That is 21% of your salary. This seems little high for any employer. If this is true I will quite my job and look for a job with Duke . I have seen employers do like 3% and they call that great.
[So if you make $60,000 year then you will get a $3600 (first 45K) and $1950 (second 15 K) to a total of $5550 (almost like 8.5% of your salary as free money). That is outstanding.]

Not exactly. Looking it up on the website, the exact numbers are 8.6% on the first $51,450, and then 13.3% (not 21%) on salary above that. So for your 60K example, it would be 51450*0.086 = 4425 and 8550*0.136=1137 for a total of $5562. Still pretty good.
Duke HR - Retirement Plans (http://www.hr.duke.edu/benefits/retirement/contribution.html - broken link)
It's a good retirement... Plus, you are immediately vested once you are in the program.
I like it here. Duke has an amazing amount of resources to be successful. I don't know where you are looking to join (nursing, doctor, technology, etc) but that also makes a difference in your decision as well.
Thanks to all who provided such helpful information. The retirement plan sounds fantastic - better than I have now. I am a nurse practitioner, currently working in a university affiliated medical center (smaller than Duke). Duke seems like it would be a great place to work. Actually, one of the doctors I work with trained at Duke and only has positive things to say - I think he wishes he was back in NC!
