Yes, that works just as well. I carry my Passport card with me. I used it the one/only time a picture ID was required for voting, to see if it would confuse the poll worker (to their credit, it did not.)

I went to the Durham (MLK Pkwy) office on a nice warm Friday afternoon in January, it took about an hour waiting, and maybe ten minutes with the DMV person. (I had to get a new license thanks to my recurring 29th birthday in early February when my current license expired.)

It took right about the two weeks to receive the new license (they gave me a temporary paper one that was not valid for Real ID.) I noticed it feels thinner and less sturdy than the old one. Hopefully that won't wind up being a problem over the next eight years.

When I last renewed my passport -- in person at Dallas, where I happened to be that day -- the guy did everything he could to give me a passport card in addition to the new passport. I already had a Global Entry card and seldom travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean... so I declined the passport card as useless clutter.

There were stories early in the Global Entry program that domestic TSA agents didn't know what a Global Entry card was and would not accept it as ID, but that seems to have been corrected at least at the larger airports. Podunk airports, maybe not. And the Global Entry card will suffice for Real ID, too.

Make an appointment if you have time before your renewal. I decided to stop at the Spring Forest location early January at 8am on a Thursday and was greeted with a line outside to the end of the building. I stood in line for nearly 3 hours in sub freezing temps and 3 hours in the building. 6 hours total.

It's all done, now. He stopped in Monday on his way home from an appointment. It was just as some of you had described...a 3 hour wait. I don't need mine until the deadline for travel so I have plenty of time to make an appointment.
