I was recently in Raleigh doing some pre-move stuff (we're relocating back to the area from California). At around midnight on a Friday I was famished and decided to swing by the Cook Out on Western Blvd. to grab a bite to eat. It wasn't a game night or anything. The entire area was rife with a bunch of white college dudes riding around in the back of pickup trucks acting stupid/rowdy. When I pulled up to a light, some guys, unprovoked, started yelling ethnic epithets at me.

We're moving back to the area to raise our family. This sort of behavior just doesn't happen where I currently live. Sure, college students party everywhere, but where I live they tend to keep in on campus and certainly aren't going out into adjacent areas and offending the community at large. From what I remember of the Triangle, it's not anything like the rural South, and I took NC State to be a respectable academic institution where you wouldn't see this sort of yokel attitude.

Is this just an aberration or am I going to have to worry about backwards behavior that my kids' peers model for them despite the Triangle being an educated and successful area?

Since spanking kids was outlawed this sort of thing happens a lot. For 2018 this is would actually be good behavior.

I don't know exactly what was said, but a Cookout on a Friday night at Midnight near a large college campus, you're going to be dealing with intoxicated college kids. Not making excuses, but that's not exclusive to the Triangle/south.

Yeah, Cookout is a "drunk hangout" on weekend nights. I love Cookout, but never go then.

Cookout is all but on NC State's campus. Not excusing that behavior, but I would not be in the area around midnight on a weekend night and expect the opera crowd.

Maybe Raleigh isn't for you. Stay in Cali.

Cookout at midnight is asking for trouble.

So this sort of thing is a positive attribute? Interesting. Let's not get into a pissing contest as to who is more native or who "belongs" here. My dad's side of the family goes back in NC to the 1700s tyvm. But wow yeah, it's going to take some refamiliarity with the "stay away if you're not one of us" claptrap I haven't experienced in quite some time.

Listen to what you're saying. I complain because drunk young adults yelled racial stuff at me. You suggest I not move here if I don't like it. That's fresh. btw it says something if losing your inhibitions because you're drunk causes that sort of behavior to come out - shows a certain root personality couched in prejudice, doesn't it?

Uh sorry this happened to you first off

And state is a respectable instution but it’s also a farm school drawing students from the small towns across the state and so you have a bunch of drunk kids not far out of high school

I’ve been haraunged in similar ways around there they just wanted to gas you to impress their friends

College kids can be pretty dumb and immature I don’t like to be around hem

Farm school ? Drawing from small towns?

That is absurd...

All college campuses have drunk kids not far out of high school.
Go down to Franklin St after a big UNC game..
