DOI allows rating down to neighborhoods, practically. I would like to thank all my neighbors who did this years ago who jacked up my rates.

And forget the BBB. It’s a scam where you can pay to magically have a good rating.

Wow - thanks. I'd always credited them with being one of the better sources. Good to know!

I've had some of these so called door to door contractors want to get on my roof to pick around to see if there is any damage. As far as I'm concerned, they're scammers.

While I agree with the advice not to go with a door-to-door salesperson, frankly I think it is prudent to get a free inspection from a local roofer. There were several hail storms this winter that could have damaged your roof, and those storms tend to be very localized (could have just affected your neighborhood). Getting a roof replaced does not equal a scam. Your roofer can go on the roof, show you pictures of the damage, and help explain the insurance options. Maybe there is no damage. For me, my roofer found damage to the roof, plus screened in porch, and gutters from hail. I had no idea. So then I contacted my insurer whose inspector went on the roof and agreed there was hail damage that if not fixed, would cause leaks. I see nothing unethical about this practice, although I know if probably raises everyone's insurance with the number of roofs being replaced. Feel free to PM me for a recommendation of a reputable local roofer.

There's a reason everyone's insurance in TX is double NC - hail damage and roof replacements.

I'm in Wakefield. Door-to-door people came through here and apparently a bunch of our neighbors bought in. They said our roof appeared to have damage and we could get it covered by insurance, but I don't see any evidence of it.

Further, I know claims are bad.

Further, if this comes back later and the insurance company finds out there was no real damage and the claims were unsubstantiated I don't want to be on the hook for insurance fraud.

So I said, no thanks.

You may have missed the real insurance fraud op:
Get the roofer to "Pay your deductible.."
Those guys and the homeowners who take it should do time............
