Of course, that's not what the owners and operators of them want. But storage centers are a poor use of land along primary roadways and they also have potential to become eyesores over the decades.
I have heard it expressed that they are actually just money making place holders for future, more remunerative, land use. Makes sense.

Yeah, I drive through that intersection during rush hour every day and was dreading what would happen if a high-traffic business were going up, with people making turns in and out of it all the time. The intersection is chaotic and dangerous as it is. Self-storage doesn't sound too bad to me in this case.

When we moved here we had a tough time finding a storage unit - there's a big demand for obvious reasons.

Eventually that demand will lessen. They put up these storage facilities because they're crazy cheap to built, and they just sit on the land while it appreciates. Once the demand lessens, it'll get sold off or redeveloped. I like to think of them as temporary.

There's a whole bunch of them near downtown Raleigh. I just don't understand it. Surely developers would catch on that other types of developments might bring in more money (especially in a hot urban envirnoment right now?)

Or maybe the storage units are making bank right now. Who knows?

The funny thing about that traffic statement is that last year there was a proposed storage unit in my neighborhood and people did attempt to use traffic as a reason to defeat it (they said truck traffic would increase which would be detrimental to local residential streets).

People who don’t want change often make irrational comments. Anything to try stop stop something they don’t want.

I figure there’s so many storage units near downtown because there’s so many small apartments and condos, and people need a place to store various things. Thing of them as a replacement for an attic (or basement up north,)

I think storage places are useful if you need a place for stuff like power tools that do not really lose value and you can get one that has electricity and/or is air conditioned and you can use it to do things you don't have room for where you live (like, if you are temporarily in an apartment or running a side gig and do not have a garage at home or what have you).

I do not think cramming them full of easily-replaceable junk is wise.

That said, I'd rather they put one up on a blank piece of land that would otherwise have weeds and look shabby than to leave it empty.

Also, if we ever reach Bay Area level rents/home prices people can live in their storage spaces :-)

Forgot to ask. I'm curious as to where you found this info? I looked at all the usual sites on the City's web page and couldn't find anything other than the demo permit. (And a general Google search.) I'm OCD enough to want to know where to look the next time! Thanks.

Go here and put in "3223 NC 55 HWY" into the filter on the left hand side of the page:
https://opendurham.nc.gov/explore/da...3223+NC+55+HWY

Shows up as "NC HWY 55 CORNWALLIS SELF-STO" in the results:

Alternatively (and probably easier) is to just find it on map view:
