Then just do it then? Why are you asking if you've already decided?

It could work out and you could find another job that pays better.

I don't know what the "right" or "smart" decision would be.

I doubt it would go up a lot more than that range if it's a state job. You might be promoted into a different position, though, and get an increase in salary that way.

Are you unhappy living in New York area? Are you only coming for more money?

Do you have a car? We have public transit here but nothing like New York. Can you come down to visit for a few days?

I do have a car (hate public transit) and I'm actually coming down next week for 10 days.

No, the pay will NOT go up over time. Publicly funded positions are almost always less than private sector, and they are notoriously bad at giving COL increases (and usually have a very small pool to use for merit raises). Honestly, I think you'll get tired of living on such a tight budget here.

Excellent. Where would the job be? Where do you want to live? Do you know yet?

You should sit down and plan where you want to be in 5, 10, 30 years. I don't mean location but overall position in life.

What sort of career growth does this job offer? Does it interest you? Does it come with perks? Will it allow you to pursue advanced certifications than lead to a much higher income? Etc.

If you dislike where you are at now this job can also help you get a foothold in this area. One thing may lead to another.
