The best burger in the country can be found, and devoured, in Chapel Hill, NC
BY DREW JACKSON

CHAPEL HILL
Of all the many burgers in this burger-loving nation, the best is in Chapel Hill.

That's according to travel review site TripAdvisor, which said Al's Burger Shack on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill serves the best burger in America. The list appears on Food and Wine's website.

TripAdvisor crunched the numbers on burger reviews across the country, and Al's Burger Shack topped this list, with 272 reviews averaging 4.5 stars.

TripAdvisor singled out Al's Bobo Chili Cheeseburger as the nation's best, a loving ode to the Carolina Burger and inspired by Melvin's in Elizabethtown. The Bobo is a burger topped with chili, slaw, yellow mustard and American cheese.

The Bobo burger beat out contenders in Florida, San Franciso, Nashville and Wyoming, including a burger between two doughnuts, one topped with queso and another topped with a half-pound hot dog.

"I'm just blown away," owner Al Bowers said of the news. "You just try and stay humble and have the same hunger and drive."...

I was wondering about this place when we were in CH a few weeks ago. We went to Carrboro Pizza Oven, though. Two thumbs up to that.

*double takes* I’m from Elizabethtown does al really say it’s inspired by Melvin’s?

I don’t really think Melvin’s invented the Carolina burger

Just saw this on ABC11.

Obviously it's subjective....but I definitely agree it's the best burger place I can think of.

I think it goes beyond much more than just the food itself. Al himself is at the flagship/original location on Franklin pretty much every day and he takes orders and works the grill too. Super nice guy and all of the staff are great. Just has a very strong local feel to it and the ingredients are fresh and burger selection is unique and dynamic (they're always coming up with awesome new burger combinations!..... "The Aubrey", and "The Paisan"..get in my mouth!)

I'd also give a very honorable mention to the burgers at the Salem Street Pub in downtown Apex. Same friendly, locally-owned scene...delcious and unique burgers ("sunny over my hammie" and "my wife said it wouldn't sell"...get in my mouth!)

They do have a very good burger, but I have a very special place in my heart for The Char-Grill on Hillsborough St.

so much for surveys ..... According to surveys Raleigh is also the 'Best City To Drive In' ..... yeah right The same outfit listed Orlando as the 3rd Best City To Drive In If you have ever tried driving I-4 in Orlando you know they must have gotten their best & worst mixed up. I have no doubt that Al's is a fantastic burger place but surly wouldn't go there based on some on-line survey.
