Hard to believe that some of our forefathers wanted to see the turkey become our nation's emblem? Of course, I look at some of the fools in public office, and think, 'perfect.'

Ben Franklin was the one behind the Turkey. I think he used the fact they are carrion eaters against the Bald Eagle. Wild Turkeys are quite majestic in their own right. They bear little resemblance to the domesticated kind. I saw two on the side of Olive Branch road (north of Brier Creek) about a week ago.

Wild turkeys are also very smart... but I think they made the right choice with the Bald Eagle... to me that is the most majestic bird.

I saw a bird almost that big with a white head swoop across my yard - I'd estimate its wingspan was 6' or so. He/she may have been eyeing my pup (we were out in the yard, on a leash). I've heard of small pets being grabbed and carried off. Once, in NH, a small dog was picked up but was dropped, as the weight of the dog was a bit too much, and the talons tore the flesh. Luckily, the vet was able to save the dog.

So, watch your pets if you are in an area where big birds of prey like to hang out!

We used to live near Cane Creek reservoir, west of Carrboro, and saw eagles regularly. If you enjoy canoeing, you can go to the reservoir and rent a canoe to do your bird watching/photography! Besides eagles, you may also see osprey, egrets, herons and kingfishers, especially as you paddle towards the smaller sw end of the reservoir.

I took a hike out to that spot on Jordan Lake with the "now closed" eagle spotting area, and didn't find anything. I ran into a retired fellow on another trail before I got there and he told me he's not seen a bald eagle out there in the last 4 years. Anyone know of any other good spots that you can hike into where there are a lot of birds, water fowl, etc.?

RDSLOTS said "We frequent the State park over at Jordan Lake. The worst we ever ran across were a couple of nude sunbathers who were actually trekking through the woods, along the trails, butt-naked. I tried not to stare, but it was awkward at best staring at a pair of Air Jordans, or *whatever* they were, on their feet."
