Driving along I-40 between Raleigh and Durham, the entire stretch is a continuous string of trees where all the lower leaves and branches are brown and dead, along with any small shrub or bush. Everything from oaks to pines seem similarly and dramatically affected. I can only suspect that some chemical was sprayed along the highway to kill something.

What was this treatment for and was this really the best approach to tackling whatever it is they were trying to get at? 20+ miles of all that clearly caustic chemical getting into our groundwater seems like a very . . . outdated thing to do.

Sounds like DOT spraying a deluge of herbicide from a truck at low speed to kill the underbrush. It’s the State way.

I drove that route tonight, and paid particular attention to the trees. I don't think it's spraying from a truck because even the trees up on hills, 10-15' above the road, have the same brown branches up to the same height on the tree.

Could it be some sort of disease?

Wow, apparently NCDOT routinely sprays using Krenite, Triclopyr 3, and Element 4 to clear low tree branches and new growth bushes and shrubs from roadsides, instead of using mechanical methods such as boom mowers. Talk about literally quick and dirty. That stuff absolutely seeps into groundwater. I’ve never seen this approach taken anywhere else.

Disturbing.

is this general "maintenance" the same reason they've been bulldozing the first 20 feet or so from the shoulder/barrier?

If around RDU, no they’re redoing the exit/interchange there into a double cloverleaf.

Yes it is a chemical they spray. Earlier this year they were mechanically working all along I40 to remove all the large branches or trees that were advancing on the roadway median. Now that that the heavier stuff has been removed, they are maintaining it by spraying a chemical from about the ground level up to about 15'. Again it is to keep the vegetation from creeping into the roadway medians. It's not new, its not a secret, and has been done this way for a very very long time. Note that it does not kill the grass in the same areas. Only the brush and the lower hanging branches.

DuPont and Monsanto love this state.
