Seems like, at least at first glance, it takes a special kind of ineptitude to lose money in a market where your only competition is out-of-state smuggling.
I can't believe people who call themselves "conservatives" support these ABC stores. It's basically communism in action, those ABC stores have less variety than government ran pantries in Cuba and the Soviet Union
Bingo. They have served me well. The Cameron Village and Atlantic Beach locations have great selections. They are part of our culture. I hope they remain for decades to come. I bet they will.

If you ever frequented liquor stores outside of NC, you would see how little NC ABC stores actually carry.

Man go to a liquor store in any other state that doesn't have a system like NC and you'd be floored by the amount of choices available. The system here in NC is broken with regard to liquor sales.
The entity named in the paper today is the State ABC commission. They loosely supervise, coordinate, and supply about 100 independent local ABC authorities in NC, one for each county (with some counties having more than one, I think). These local guys actually run their individual fiefdoms.
My understanding is that you can get just about any beverage available in the United States, with the requirement that you buy a full case.
I personally don't like the system all that much. But I think that it works fairly well. Prices are not too bad, and are consistent state-wide. Doesn't the money (profits) go toward funding the local school systems?
I lived in Maryland for a while, which is not a govt-controlled ABC state. Their system of independent stores always seemed kind of grubby to me.

Same experience here -- the Atlantic Beach store is amazing, all things considered.
