Thankfully my health insurance covers my flu shots as well as the shingles vaccine 100%.
It's coming up on 2 weeks since I had my Shingrix shot (1 of 2). Other than a raised area about the size of a silver dollar with some redness, starting 2 days afterward and resolving a few days after that, I've had no other side effects. No pain, no residual soreness, no fever, no chills. Very pleased and glad I went and got the first one done and didn't put it off.
By comparison, with the older Zostavax vaccine I got a couple years ago I experienced pain during the injection, pain and swelling afterwards, and soreness that lasted several days.
I'll get this year's flu shot in mid-October and then Shingrix shot 2 of 2 in Nov or Dec.
I think reading this thread cursed us or something. My 14 yr old has the shingles! She did have chicken pox when she was about 2 and thought she was getting a heat rash initially, but we began to suspect shingles, and the doc at UNC urgent care confirmed it today. Poor thing.
I am a very healthy 56 year old female. I got my first Shingrix vaccination 4 months and only experienced minor soreness at the injection site.
My 2nd dose was a different story. I was felt like I was burning up all night and then alternated with chills. I took Tylenol and that helped but I still feel like I am barely functioning. I wish I could have called in sick and just stayed home today. It is 24 hours after the injection now, and I am starting to feel a little bit better.
Just be prepared to feel really crummy for a day.
Had my first injection of Shingix about 9 hours ago. I had the flu vaccination in one arm, the Shingrix in the other. I feel unusually chilled and my legs ache. It might be that I have a slight fever. Family Guy still seems funny in its normal crude way. The Shingrix injection site is sore the flu vaccination site is not.
I stumbled on this forum whilst researching adverse side effects AFTER having the first Shingrix shot. The first time I experienced 2 days of severe headache, fatigue and muscle aches. Basically like the flu I guess. I dreaded the second dose but dutifully had it done on Friday. I felt quite well except for arm soreness. For 9 hours. Then the nausea hit as well as fatigue. Not as bad a headache thankfully. It is now 48 hours and I am exhausted but other than that, doing okay. That could be because last night was tough with nightmarish feverish wakefulness. I hope and pray tonight is better.
And now I read that this vaccine is effective for only 5 years... that sucks.

The vaccine is new, so no one knows whether a booster will ever be needed in the future. As the OP said, even if you had two days of side effects (which are all caused by your immune system revving up), that is still better than having shingles and potentially permanent pain from it.

Definitely! I am looking at it that way as much as possible too.
Thaving shingles and potentially permanent pain from it.
Whoa - didn't know about the permanent part. Had a mild case a few years back, a couple time since felt a hint of a return that faded away as quickly. Recurrence potential I knew, permanent I didn't.

It's called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The pain can be severe, permanent, may respond poorly to treatment, and is the most common factor for suicide in the elderly.
