All day every day. Can't even open the door without a few getting in the house. These are not normal mosquitoes either - mosquitoes in NC have never liked me, but the mosquitoes since Florence are taking no prisoners.
I have a lot of mosquito bites right now after spending time doing yard work over the weekend. If it's this bad here, just imagine what the folks in the Hurricane Florence bulls-eye are getting. These mosquitoes are able to get you through clothing. Or at least the ones attracted to me.
Ours have been knocked down substantially since Terminix came through and did their monthly service, but there are a few lingering due to some standing water on our property.
The standing water is where they lay their eggs, so the more you can tip/dump the better. There are also some granules you can get to drop in larger standing water that kill the larvae.
We find when sitting out that having a small oscillating fan running in combination with some citronella torches helps a lot. And for fun we bought an electric mosquito swatter (found it at Home Depot). Yes, we get a little thrill out of hearing them zap.
We also invested in a mosquito magnet. If you are willing to spend the money & do the monthly cleaning, it helps a lot. Doesn't get them all, but I'm amazed at how many are in the basket when we dump it out - each one is one that won't be biting me.
They do seem particularly bad with the wet weather, but we are finding a little work & we can at least survive in our yard with only one or two bites at the end of the day.
I read that the mosquito zappers actually don’t work and really just kill flies not mosquitos. The reason being that mosquitos are not attracted to light but to objects (such as humans) which emit carbon dioxide.
Fortunately we rarely have mosquitoes near our house, so I hadn't noticed the uptick.
But we went to Harris Lake park to walk the trail and had to turn around about 2 minutes in. I've never seen anything like that - mosquitoes were swarming.
