Did you mention in another thread that you work nights and are free during the day?
You are generally going to see beer, etc, in any place offering decent tables. Pool halls only make money on the extras. Tables are hardly profitable for them, and cannot carry the rent in nice locations.
I would look for a room with daylight hours. Less likelihood of sloppy behavior by patrons after a few beers.
Unfortunately, many rooms open for evening. 2:00 or later.
Have never been, but this one opens at noon. About
Brown's Billiards isn't bad, though I would definitely go during the day. At night there is a lot of very loud music, drinking and (outside) smoking. My husband and I used to go there on Friday nights. The pool tables are good and the people who work there are very nice, as are the other patrons.
Does table size and equipment matter? Places like Ale House will have little 7' coin-op tables and worn out equipment. A real pool hall will have nicer stuff, bigger tables and charge by the hour. It depends on what you're looking for. The one across from the old mall in Cary, on Buck Jones is decent. As is Sharkys in west Raleigh. Go early to avoid "nightlife".
I've been planning on taking my 14 year old to Hot Shots in Cary, but that would be on a weekend or week day when he is tracked out. I don't mind the pub atmosphere. We frequently dine at pubs when traveling.

You might also try out Buck's in Cary. I'm just an old lady observer (not a player), but I like buck's better.

Nonsense.
There are PLENTY of kid friendly pool halls. Just like there are plenty of pubs where you can sit comfortably with your teenage kids and watch football.
It's been over 60 years since Dr Henry Hill sang about the trouble supposly caused by pool halls - https://youtu.be/kTXEJizAneY
Very Few pool halls are sleazy anymore. Tournaments ate televised, just like poker.
