It frustrating that homeowners aren't held more accountable to the fate of tall trees falling from their property. I can accept a healthy tree toppling over, but in my mind that's rarely the case. In my neighborhood all of the downed trees I've seen were rotting inside. Not checking the health of their trees is negligence.
During hurricanes there are two different ways for trees to hit a house. One is when the whole thing tips over (seems common with hard wood trees) and the other is when a pine tree finally snaps in half from being blown sideways and then rebounding many times each minute. I'm sure unhealthy trees can give out easily, but all the damage I've witnessed was from seemingly healthy trees.
Bradford pears, on the other hand, are a different story. The need to be pruned just once...at ground level...and then they will be safe.

My neighbor's tree that fell this summer was a perfectly healthy pine tree.
I had some dead and sick ones removed earlier in the spring, but theirs that fell looked fine.
Yep, just saw that Durham County canceled. Still no word from my kids' school.
This one has echoes of 1995’s Cat 4 Hurricane Opal for me. She came in over the Panhandle and rolled by Atlanta quickly but with high winds and heavy rains. Lots of old growth oaks came down in the city. I was without power for a week. I’m hoping Michael keeps as far east as possible from Raleigh and loses more strength. Fran did a number on the home I live in now, with multiple oaks down on the house. Fingers crossed. I won’t even complain about Wake County schools being out this time, unlike Florence. I promise...
According to the article, the forecast is for gusts up to 30mph. It sure did look like Michael was strengthening to near Cat-5 before landfall. Somehow, that 30mph estimate just seems a little low, because it's the same forecast they had when Michael was barely a Cat-2.
I dunno. Maybe it won't be much of anything, but I pity the person who works or goes to the fair after noon tomorrow.
I'm glad I already went to the grocery store this week because there are people freaking out at them now, I just know it.
