Of course there is. Buy a house in Morrisville or Cary and just drive on the regular roads.
But the downside is you're living in Morrisville or Cary...
There are 3 options to get to 540, so depending on where you live some are better than others. Traffic, generally, from HS to 540 is not bad at all. Yes there is some congestion but nothing terrible.
That's why I asked where you were working. The trip via US1 or 40 is far worse than anything in Holly Springs. 540 from HS is a breeze and worth every penny.

But... how is Holly Springs any different, really? It's not like one can buy a lot of acreage there anymore. I assume OP is referring to moving into an HOA neighborhood and HS is a suburb, just like Cary and Morrisville, only further out from everything with more traffic bound to happen as time passes and forced toll road driving.
It's illogical unless one LIKES living far from activities and/or commuting on toll roads.

As others said, toll road is the way to go. If you have to use other routes it’s an unpleasant commute. Toll road from Hwy 1 to 147 with a transponder is about $2 one way.
Yeah, you're looking at about $900-$1,000 a year if you work about 50 weeks out of the year, 5 days a week, off holidays, etc. IMO that's totally worth the lack of stress and pleasant drive that the Expressway presents. As I've said before, you could have a much easier drive from the southern terminus of 540 in Holly Springs to most of RTP than you can get in parts of Cary (not using the toll road) driving to parts of RTP.
I work in RTP, and I bought a smaller house and yard in West Cary. I probably could have gotten more for my money in HS, but the 15 minute drive to work and being central to Raleigh, Durham, and Apex sure does make up for it!
