I am going to relocate to Triangle area. I had 10 years experience as a computer programmer. I thought that find a job should be very easy in the area. I submitted my resume through the dice.com, careerbuild.com and some company’s web site, but I got no answer at all.

Moderator cut: removed What is the best way to get a job interview in the area?

competition is very high. there are many qualified people who live here, and often employers will choose them over someone out of state.

Usually, the best bet is the news and observer- which is the main newspaper for the area. their classifieds are online.

There's not as many good tech jobs as people say there are here. There's a lot of mediocre tech jobs, and a lot of companies where you will be the only programmer (or maybe THE IT guy).

I applied for 8 months before I got a job. And that was 2 years ago when the market was much better. Try a contract agency. That's what I ended up doing.

Craigslist worked like a charm for me.

In addition, I paid for a monster.com account. $7.99 a month or something like that and modified my resume on a regular basis, even if it was just adding or removing a word. The longer the resume stayed the same the fewer views it got. I guess modifying it bumps it up the list.

To be fair though, all the calls I got through monster.com and careerbuilder.com were garbage. Do I want a 3 month contract in Seattle ? Not really.

I used monster a long time ago, and got lots of calls for places like Asheville, even though I live in Raleigh and specified "Triangle area only". The people leaving the messages sounded like they were reading straight from a script and were bored to death. I got these calls for over two years after I posted there, and didn't think I'd ever quit hearing from them...but not ONE single ad they called with was remotely close to my qualifications, most of them not even in the area.

It's a lot more work, but really the way to job-hunt is to find out the companies in the area you want to be in, and go to their individual websites. A public library will have large directories of businesses, sorted by industry and geography (I used to be a business librarian and did market research). Get a few that way, then hunt down their websites, since they'll be a lot more up-to-date than a headhunter site.
