I wonder how many current DMV employees will make the commute?
"After agreeing to leave its headquarters, DMV did not receive any money to build a new one from the General Assembly. Instead, the state budget approved last summer directed the DMV to begin seeking leased space in “Wake County and surrounding counties.”
Among the proposals the agency received were four in Raleigh, two each in Garner and Research Triangle Park and one in Morrisville."
$30 million rent over 15 years, but no resources for a local build?
I'll miss using the New Bern DMV.
Nice spiff for Rocky Mount and they sure can use it, but it seems a bit poorly planned.
This seems like a very poor choice. Some people are going to definitely cut their losses if it does move to Rocky Mount due to the increased commute. There is a reason why RM's bid was the lowest. Have fun recruiting anyone in younger demographics.
This almost seems like a joke, or something one would read on the Onion. I wonder if a lease has actually been signed? if not, it may be a ruse in order to get the General Assembly to provide more funding for a new location in Wake County.
Not surprised. The Hardees HQ complex has a "27-acre campus, six separate buildings with a combined 206,000 square feet of office, flex and warehouse space, room to park 600 cars, plus a vacant three-acre lot for future expansion." DMV is taking about two-thirds of the square footage. I suspect the investors who purchased the complex in 2016 for $1.3 million are getting desperate for a tenant.
Let's see what NCDOT comes up with, in terms of transportation services for employees other than private cars. The Hardees site is easily accessible from the US 64 bypass, and the traffic flow on I-87/US 64 is counter to working in Rocky Mount. Besides I suspect that a significant number of DMV employees live in Knightdale or east Wake.
In any event, Rocky Mount needs help.
Decentralization of state government from downtown Raleigh is an inevitability, given the poor condition of many of the state buildings and the opportunity to sell state property to private developers for big bucks. And the truth is, given the salaries that many state jobs offer, state employees are being priced out of the Raleigh housing market.
