Friend of mine saw a copperhead in her backyard a week or two ago. Took a picture. There was no doubt it was a baby copperhead. It was during that really cold snap, too. I was confused as to why they would be having babies then, but what do I know?

Are they 100% sure it was a baby copperhead? Only reason I ask is we’ve seen a lot of very small corn snakes over the winter that can be readily mistaken for baby copperheads in the woods/yard.

Well, on Nextdoor it's not fully confirmed until the 47th person (in a row) confirms the identity of the snake.

Lucky you - you live in a lenient neighborhood. In our neighborhood it's the 48th person.

Corn Snake (Elaphe guttata)
Yes. I saw the picture. Had the yellow tail. I know copperheads well (my dog has been bitten 3 times) and a relative has been bitten as well. I see them all summer long. Was just surprised to see one in Feb. There are lots of snakes in the older neighborhoods in Chapel Hill. We regularly see black rat snakes, brown snakes, worm snakes, rough green snakes, northern water snakes, the occasional garter snake, black racers, and lots of copperheads. Never have seen a corn snake around here although I know what they look like and used to play with my cousin's pet corn snake. The snake my friend found was undisputedly a baby copperhead.

Looked just like this: http://herpsofnc.org/wp-content/uplo...Co-NC-copy.jpg

Nope. The last two years were considerably warmer winters. Prior to that however were much colder. This year is just average in the temperature department for all winter.

...But the moisture on the other hand, we are sopping wet this winter. ...and have been for about a year.

Seems cloudier too but not sure on that one.

so.
sick.
of.
rain.

The temps are fine with being normal, but what about the actual rainfall in inches compared to previous years? We have rain most of the week and the ground is all wet pretty much the entire week. Look at the current forecast. So combine that with our clay soil, the yard is always wet, I bet everyone's crawlspace is very damp and also causing other water problems.

Someone commented recently on our Nextdoor water drainage issue, "Oh goodie, more rain - wouldn't want to get the mud to dry out."

My HOA doesn't allow copperheads!
