Local news reports that there was a multi-apartment fire caused by a resident trying to start a fireplace fire, using gasoline.

There's no words needed for this irresponsible, downright "can't fix stupid" action.

I'm a lot more surprised that there are apartments complexes with open fireplaces - closed gas log, maybe, but not open.

I agree it seems insane that they would build apartments with wood burning fireplaces. Honestly it seems insane to even have gas fireplaces.

Every apartment I've lived in around the state and other states had open fireplaces. Just get those easy flame logs at the grocery store and fire it up. They are very cheap to build vs gas fireplaces is why apartments build them.

Wow - I've not lived in a lot of apartments (7-8 in various states), but none I've lived in had 'em.

yeah, there's been a lot of apartment fires in the news lately, and I've wonder what's been going on. Fireplaces and apartments/condos/townhomes don't mix. Just a bad idea all around

"I'll just take this here can of gas up to my apartment in case I ever need it.

Oh, look - a fireplace!"

As noted, you cannot fix this kind of stupid.

My apartment has an open gas fireplace. I never use it.

The other thing about nearly all these recent apartment fires that astounds me is the number of people who have no renters insurance. It's not expensive!! You can get a decent policy for about $10/mo! Hell, I have a low deductible and high replacement value, and I still only pay about $20/mo.

My complex actually requires renters insurance. I think they all should, to be honest.

But I guess people plan to use GoFundMe as their insurance policy.
