We read constantly about how Raleigh is #3 (or whatever) in the country as a place to live, raise a family, start a new business, place for singles, smartest, most techie, fastest growing, etc. You name it. Seems the town can do no wrong.

But in the last year, Raleigh has been shunned by Amazon, Apple, the Military Research Center, and now the USDA Ag Research Center.

On the plus side, there are stories of many new and expansions of tech companies, unemployment is low, and so forth. So it's not all bad.

Are we doing OK or are we slipping?

I personally think we're slipping. I would put us no higher than 4th best place in the country to live right now.

As long as unemployment is low and there are high quality jobs, I could care less what big brand name company/institution passes up the Triangle.

Has Raleigh really been named a top five place for singles??

Last I saw Raleigh was #42.

Those lists are a curse

Even if we aren't slipping, we should pretend like we are

That all depends upon what your idea of greatness is.

It's pretty okay for me. One of the biggest problems is all the growth driving COL up. It's not the bargain it once was, but that's to be expected.

Those lists are just copy marketing meant to generate hits and embedded media ads by wral

Go to any decent growing city their local news will be plugging the same list

We are a target for NE migration and these lists come after the fact to feed the RE hype

I don't really think that not being chosen = being "shunned". It just means other locations were chosen for a wide variety of reasons.

Raleigh has decent jobs and cheap housing. That is what makes it so attractive. But as a place to live/city it is purely mundane and really offers little of value IMO. But I could place the entire east coast in that bucket too lol.
