I live in NJ & had a nest of ducks in our backyard under my husbands landscaping lawnmower! It took 28 days to hatch & they made their escape while we at our eye doctor appointment so I did not get to see they little duck parade! But now there is another nest in the front yard with only 4 eggs in it & the mother has not been back for 4 days......I guess I have to wait longer & see if she comes back. Because we live in the suburbs I am afraid she was hit by a car or something. The last nest the mother & father duck stayed around the whole time. The dad would leave during the day but would always come back at night time. So this is very out of the ordinary to not see the mother for days on end. I'm not sure what to do this time!!! Any suggestions?
Nine years have passed since the thread started. During that time, coyote infiltration in the Triangle has increased. Don't be surprised if a coyote gets those eggs or the hatchlings despite everything you do to block them off.
I found a random mallard duck egg that was laid on my path right next to my pond. I have checked and there is no hidden nest anywhere. Is it ok to move this egg to the mulch and just hope that momma duck comes back? Not sure why she would lay one on a brick path?

I would move it over to the mulch close to the path. Not sure what happened, but you could watch for the duck to return. She might reveal the location of the nest.
