interesting stuff. E-Verify is optional for all but Federal employers/contractors.

So just as local LEO or state governments refuse to cooperate with ICE, the Feds can't compel them to use E-Verify.

Why wouldn't it be optional?

You think businesses would choose to go against their own self interests by choice?

I'm not sure I understand your point.

It is the states' option to participate in assisting the Federal government with illegal immigration action.

It is also the states' option to participate in e-Verify.

So, 24 states have chosen to require participation in e-Verify at varying degrees.

Correct, but you don't think a state weighs who their biggest businesses are (and who is throwing them money in terms of elections and lobbying) into account when the choose to participate, to varying degrees, with E-Verify?

From all I've read, I'm with the sheriff on this one. Looks like the convict served his time and if ICE/CBP wanted to deport him they had plenty of time and documentation. Raleigh is not 100 miles from any border (including the Atlantic ocean, thus has no authority nor obligation to detain ex-convicts for immigration violations). I believe it IMPEARITIVE to follow the law or change it!

More proof that it's not just us who have an issue with the new Sheriff... it's a shame it's too late to recall him.

The issues listed in the article are completely different in scope. If the Sheriff is not following proper procedure in regards to money management, hiring, and contracts then he needs to change or the office is not for him. These issues are completely different than the ICE refusals.
