you should always be very leary of actually taking I-40 from the NC beaches to Raleigh on any holiday weekend Monday. Some cut from 95 to 50 in Benson, or very soon thereafter. On LD Weekend, I left 40 at Faison, went up to Goldsboro, and then 795/264. Took about 20 minutes longer than a free and clear 40 ... but at least it was at highway speed 95% of the time.

When I was still living in Goldsboro, 795/264 was always my preferred route when going to Raleigh or Greenville since US-70 was a disaster back then and US-13 between Goldsboro and Greenville is a PITA.

Now, if I-40 wasn't under construction, I wouldn't have a problem taking US-70 since it's improved from 10 years ago.

I ran into a similar construction situation a few Fridays ago coming back from Wilmington. Waze directed me onto 95, where it was stopping, and on to 70. After merging back onto 40, I ended up next to a truck I'd been next to earlier on 40, so I figured I broke even.

Regarding Wake Forest Rd., I don't know why they haven't gotten rid of the center turn lane and put in a 2-4' concrete median and added an extra foot to each travel lane.

originally Wake Forest Rd was a great 2 lane road. The 80's answer to growing traffic was to just convert the road in each direction from 2 lanes to 3 and its been that way ever since.

And convert is the correct word. They added a lane in each direction, but didn't widen the road between the beltline and Millbrook Rd.

What was the problem with this mornings commute then? i40W jammed inside the beltline sending me on a self guided tour through the city. MLK was clogged, I went up Raleigh Blvd to New Bern>Edenton>Hillsborough>Western. The Waze workout.

90 minutes for what normally takes 35.

Dave

I recommend using Waze and fixing your AC.

I saw one guy this morning sitting in the middle of an intersection near page rd and Slater when he had a red light. Cars had to literally swerve around him in both lanes of travel.

He wanted to turn, but the light turned red. I guess he thought it was a good idea to park in the intersection rather than backup to the turn lane. Sheesh.
