Pharmacists told me they returned their vaccine in August due to a change in target.
Truly, they did tell me that.
It is possible they returned unused 2018 - 2019 vaccine. They can do that and get refunds. Last year's vaccine cannot be used for this year. They would not be returning 2019-2020 product.

That is not what happened. The 2 strains recommended to cover the Victoria and Yamagata lineages of Influenza B remain unchanged. However, experts recommend a new strain for Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09-like virus in February based on data of circulating viruses. The recommendation for the Influenza (H3N2) strain was made by the WHO on March 21, 2019 and chosen for United States vaccines by VRBPAC 1 day later."
By March 22, 2019, the strains were "set in stone" so to speak. Flu vaccine expires June 30. Usually you return your left-overs in July.
I hate to hear they didn’t get the vaccine right. I got the senior shot if that makes any difference. I’ll stop at Publix and check with the pharmacist.

These choices can make a big difference. A few years ago I contracted a strain of H3N2 while on a business trip to Chile. Was the worst case of flu I've ever had. I didn't know that WHO publishes a different vaccine recommendation for the Southern Hemisphere. They just came out with the recommendation for 2020.
But whether it's north or south, the medical community is just making an educated guess about what strains to include. Some years they get it right, some years they don't.

We don't know yet what the dominant strains will be. That is pure fear-mongering.

Yes, but the fundamental limitation is still a quadrivalent vaccine that protects against two A's and two B's. Even when there are compelling indications that more than four strains are likely to circulate in significant numbers, the vaccine is limited to four total... and in some cases people are still getting the trivalent vaccine.
