Simple: USB port failed that ran attached network backup drive. Netgear told me no more software updates for it were planned.
(My USB drive was an enclosure with a SSD drive and it was not always being recognized.)

Wow I'm shocked that cheap consumer hardware failed after 3 years. You definitely deserved a free router courtesy of your fellow Costco members.

Ha! They also took back my "waste-of-money" memory (too soft) foam mattress that my spine doctor said was really messing up my then 70-year old spine! Put it on a pallet, in back of pickup truck.

Great company!

I've been using this modem/router with Spectrum (previously TWC) for the past 3 years:

It's been flawless. The original modem I got from TWC had to be rebooted every few weeks, but no similar issues with the Arris.

Look at retail markup and margins. There is a reason why those numbers are vastly different...

When did you return it? Because of things like this, Costco has changed their return policy. I would assume routers fall under the "computer" category

"We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price, with the following exceptions:
  • Electronics: Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member received the merchandise) for Televisions, Tuner-Free Displays, Projectors, Major Appliances (refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers), Computers, Touchscreen Tablets, Smart Watches, Cameras, Aerial Cameras (drones), Camcorders, MP3 players and Cellular Phones (return details will vary by carrier service contract)."

Mid-2018

The "electronics return policy" does not appear to apply to the likes of routers, modems, etc.

When in doubt, ask for the manager on-duty.

A few weeks ago, I saw folks returning bottled water after a hurricane scare.

OT Watch for all the vacuum cleaners returned after New Years, full of pine needles. CRAZY.

You want a modem that will handle the speed of your connection tier, so if you're paying for 400mbps then make sure the modem you purchase will accommodate that speed or higher. Surfboard by Motorola is on the list of approved modems.

As for a router, one that is intended to cover the house and high speed. I'm using an Asus RT-AC66U, but that router is several years old and there are newer models out. I've been happy with the performance of my router and plan to continue using it for as long as possible.
