NC-55 through Holly Springs will be downgraded to secondary route status and NC-55 Bypass will simply be NC-55.

It can be seen on page 7.

That's just a technicality right? Shouldn't affect anything...

There’s three tiers of funding, statewide, regional and division. An NC route would be eligible for both Regional or Division funds, an SR only for Division. I think that’s just about the only difference. A future widening for “old” 55 would have less chance of making it into the STIP.

In addition to what TrafficSys said, there will just be sign changes. No construction required.

Why downgrade the route then?

The town may want to do something that typically wouldn’t be allowed on an NC route. More likely, there was some confusion to some about the double names, and the old road no longer needs the numbering, so it was changed.

55-Bypass has colloquially been called "55" from inception. This is one of those changes that, as stated above, is a technicality. Additionally with the planned downtown for Holly Springs, they probably want to ensure that it's not looked at as a thoroughfare and more of a destination.

This makes sense now that the NC 55 Bypass no longer really feels like a bypass with all the shopping centers and traffic lights along the route.
