ETA - and you could do way worse than JW Black.
I started drinking scotch with JW Red but now I won't drink it. JW Black is ok.

Have not tried HP. What's it like?

JW Red! Wowza.

Black is decent. Double Black is good as is Platinum.

Gold is the best bang for the buck in terms of JW (IMHO)

Blue is too much of a hype train (again, IMHO) for the price.

If you want to stay with Single Malts (rather than JW Blends)

Highland Park is fantastic (18 is really really good, 12 is a more affordable daily driver). Its a Highland style scotch, so its more smokey and peaty than a Speyside, but less so than Islay Scotches, like Lagavulin.

I consider Islay Scotches "not for novice" Scotches; the smoke/peat/earth thing is a lot on the palette.

Balvenie Double Barrel is also great (Balvenie is a Speyside, as is Aberlour and Macallan which you mentioned you purchased, if you like those two, I'd give Balvenie a shot).

A handle of Dewars White Label and Bridge was my go to Friday night before kids (handle split among 3 of the 4 Bridge players). Handle was ~30 bucks in MA (booze prices in NC I find ridiculous)
