On my street, kids run out ALL the time in front of my car. They rely on their audible senses to hear vehicles but my car is a Prius and is SUPER quiet. I drive up my street so slowly and just am hyper vigilant for this to happen. If I was to be checking a text or even changing radio channels, I could easily hit someone.
Anyway...my son crosses this 55 bypass all the time at the crosswalk but I'm still really paranoid about it. I tell him that he needs to wait until he see's the cars stop, not just rely on the light turning red and the indication that he can walk.
(I know this most recent accident wasn't due to any of that...but there was a guy killed riding his bike right on this bypass a few years back because of a light jumper)

That makes it all the more heartbreaking.
