ATC does not tell anyone how or what to do, basically we are asking for permission to do what we want and they fit our requests in. Obviously with the airport closed (common for any sort of accident to allow emergency vehicles to roam about at will) they couldn't let people land but they aren't directing flights to other airports without being told where they are going. Hope that makes sense.

In my case we were supposed to land around 745 and I ended up stepping off at around 10 IIRC.

Are you a pilot, flight attendant, or some other support ??? Just curious

Thank you for the explanation wheelsup. I had no idea that’s how it would work!

Apparently this poor pilot couldn’t find the runway ATC was trying to help him. Surely the runway is obviously lit up and umstead totally dark? How did he pick umstead to land in ?
