Well, Clayton and Wake Forest are two completely different areas. What are you looking for? Job location? Kids? Schools? Any info on what you are looking for, we can help! Just need a bit more details.
I think it is just a personal preference question. I don't think you could go wrong in either case. I would think Wake Forest is a little more congested and more established as a community. Seems that Clayton has just now caught on.
It truly is a personal preference. I think it would depend on where you work and what you like - Clayton is pretty far out if you work in Raleigh imo. Wake Forest has a great park planned that is going in very close to Twin Creeks. There are greenways behind this development that will take you to the new park. The park is planned in stages. It will have something like a amphitheater, 5 or so tennis courts, etc. Clayton has some good things too. It just depends.
If we didn't have children, we would have chosen Wake Forest. The Wake county schools (the redistricting specifically) issues were a deal breaker for us. We were moving our girls at 15 and 10. It was a hard enough transition without worrying they'd be changing schools yearly.
We are enjoying Clayton, but are feeling a little too far from things from time to time. It was still worth it for the school stability, my girls are thriving in school here and that right now is our priority.

If you don’t already have jobs lined up I suggest that you stay where you are until the economy improves. If you do have a job here in Raleigh then choose the town closest to your new position.

I agree that its all about personal preference. But actually it depends on WHERE in Raleigh you are commuting to. There are parts of Raleigh that we (here in Clayton) are only 20 minutes to. And places in Raleigh that are 50 minutes from Wake Forest. It really really depends on WHERE in Raleigh and where in Clayton or Wake Forest you are talking about.
The other issue to consider is schooling. We specifically chose Johnston County to avoid the year round/busing issues, which have worked out very nicely for many. We just wanted to avoid it on top of a grueling relocation (it took us 3 moves in 10 months to get here!)
Best bet...is to drive to both areas and visit alot of neighborhoods/schools and see what "feels" right to you.

Well..the last I read about was back in Feb where the Superintendant was looking for a school volunteer for a pilot program. They reiterated that it would be volunteer only.
They say the research supports year round in helping students to pass or get higher passing EOG scores since they don't have the summer to forget all they've learned. So they were focusing on 95 corridor towns (where scores were lowest).
Have you heard more?
