I was doing some railfanning in Reidsville about
10:00 last night when I saw a deer strolling though
the middle of downtown...

Yeah. All the clearcutting going on around here is not great.
Well, not strictly true. There are more deer in North America now than when Columbus landed. A mature expansive forest harbors far fewer deer than a suburb. Clear cutting opens up huge amounts of food source for them. Walk through the woods and you’ll see that there’s very little for them to eat, especially in older forests. Clear cut those same woods and the sun hits the soil and grows things for them to eat. There is a reason that Western NC in the Pisgah and Nantahala forests have relatively few deer. Deer season reflect that. In wake County and eastward, firearm season for deer is almost three months long. The mountains have a three week firearm season.

The spike in deer activity right now is the effect of their mating season. Bucks that normally would be bedded down are out chasing does, and does that aren’t fully in estrus are, well, running from Bucks.
