This is what jumped out at me. What time was it? If it was later on Saturday night then I'd say it's on the parents to know it might not be family friendly, just like if they take a kid to a PG-13 or R movie they might hear and see some things that they might not want them to. If it was Sunday afternoon I would say that's family time.
Can't judge the poetry slam w/o hearing it but I think you gotta be prepared for anything at that kind of event. I have been to Cocoa Cinnamon a couple of times and have friends that really like it, but it's not really my scene. I felt super uncool and unhip there. Plenty of other places to go.

I tend to agree with this. Parents of young children seem to have lost all concept of where kids belong and where they don't.
Oh my! Let me run grab my pearls so that I can clutch them.
It amazes me that people get so upset by two consonant sounds and a vowel sound. But ok.
If don't think your child is mature enough for the poetry event you're attending, you leave. If you don't like the poetry event you're attending, you leave. Obviously others were enjoying it. Isn't it great to live in a time and place where we all have these choices?
I assume you are not a fan of Bill Burr (or past greats like Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce).
I like Bill Burr, although I think he was better before he married Nia.
I also think Bill would be twice as funny if he scrapped the language. I'm not a fan of Pryor or Lenny Bruce. My favorite comedian is/was Jerry Clower, "The Mouth Of Mississippi".

It was about 8 p.m. on Saturday and I saw a couple of young parents in line to order with kids that look to be about 1 to 4 years old.
I've been to many coffee shops and poetry events. But I never in my many years seen or heard anything like this.
It's definitely the owner's choice to run the business the way she sees fit (the owners are women).
I just can't believe that they would allow someone to gratuitously offend the very customers that patronize the establishment.
On an only semi-related note.....did you really drive all the way to Durham from Clayton to check out a coffee shop?
I have business and associates in Durham close by...
