I interviewed for a job in Durham NC, will hear in late November if I am chosen. (Moving from Boston area). What is the housing market like? Given that the company is in downtown Durham, where could I buy a (single family) home and have an easy commute? By easy I mean 20 minutes or less.

Whats your budget for a house? The market is somewhere between red hot and white hot.

Budget would be $350-450k. Looking for a 3+ bedroom, 2.5 bath with at least 2 car garage.

20 min from Downtown Durham is pretty much the whole Triangle area. You can get as far as Chapel Hill or within the Raleigh Beltline in that time. Look at commute heat maps for a sense of what to expect.

The garage will be a limiting factor, if it is essential for you. Garages are not typical aside from McMansion-type houses in the suburbs. It barely snows here, so there's less of a need to keep cars out of the weather. Aside from that stipulation, with your budget and commute time, you should be easily able to find what you are looking for.
