I am relocating to the area soon and currently work as a ER Nurse. Wanted to know the differences in working at Duke, UNC, and WakeMed Hosiptals. Benefits, Pay Rate, Tuition Reimbursement, Relocation Bonuses, Parking, Hours, and Environment?? The more information the better. Thanks

You can probably get each one to send you a summary of benefits to compare that. There have been some recent threads on this topic:

Duke is, of course, a large academic medical center in Durham. Duke also runs Durham Regional Hospital in Durham and owns Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh.
UNC Healthcare includes the UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill (major academic) and Rex Healthcare in Raleigh (community hospital).
WakeMed owns two hospitals, one in Raleigh and one in Cary. They also run two freestanding EDs, one in North Raleigh and in Apex.
So the experience is going to be very different at each of the facilities! Parking is worst at Duke and UNC, next-worst at WakeMed Raleigh, and easy at the rest. Hours, pay rate, and relocation is going to be very individual - nurses are in demand in this market and so you can probably find what you want in terms of schedule. Pay is not as high here as in CA or the NE, but the competitive market makes it pretty good.

My husband and I relocated to Cary last week. We are both currently seeking positions - he is an RN and I'm an NP. RN salaries are definitely lower here than the Northeast (we came from RI). Seems the hourly RN rate is approximately $23 - $30 per hour w/benefits. WakeMed seems to be the be the highest paying local hospital, Rex the lowest. Duke offers the academic atmosphere - incredible institution but parking isn't the most pleasant. You must park a few blocks away, pay about $55/month for that privilege and get shuttled back and forth to the hospital. All applications are now done online, HR reviews the applications and forwards them to the appropriate manager for their review. Neither of us has looked into UNC as yet but I've heard great things. I know both Duke, Durham Regional and WakeMed offer 12 hr shifts in various departments. You can go to each website - Duke has a separate HR website and search positions available but you must post your info/resume online in order to apply. Hope this helps at least a little. Good luck!

Is that applicable to nurses with 7 t0 10 years of experience? Because my wife is also an ER nurse and planning to move to Cary early next year.

This is pretty much the range we've found here in most hospitals. A couple of the hospitals offered up to $35/hr for per diem with no benefits. You can also google "Salary Wizard" and look up average NC RN salaries city by city.
For Raleigh Durham:
10th% 49,059
50th% 55K
90th% 70K

Having spent three years at WakeMed and currently working in the ED at Duke, I feel that it probably depends on what you are used to. Having come from a teaching institution before moving to NC and WakeMed, I found WakeMed to be more 'primitive' when it came to the attitudes toward nurses. It definitely pays better, but for me, pay was not everything. I prefer being respected as a professional, and having a say in the care of a pt. Just my humble opinion...

I work at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Parking is not $55 a month - it is $75 a year and you park one block from the hospital. On nights and weekends you can park directly across from the hospital in the parking deck and you do not pay extra for this (your badge is swiped in and out of the deck). There is a shuttle available from the hospital to the lot if you leave at night; you do not have to walk alone to your car. I've worked at UNC as well, and parking is DISGRACEFUL. Parking here can be annoying but it's not the PITA that UNC's is.
I know this post is a bit old, but it sort of bothered me.

I agree with the above poster, I work nights in the ED, and it costs me six dollars per month to park in the garage across from the hospital. From what I am told, it costs a bit more to park in the lots and shuttle for day shift, but nowhere near $55/month. I think teaching hospitals are always bad for parking, at University of Michigan it was approx. $500 per year, and I worked nights.... I still wouldn't trade the parking or the pay.... It isn't Utopia at Duke (where is?), but I am very happy there.... Good staff to work with, and the benefits are pretty good... I can go to school after 2 years and have a HUGE chunk paid for. You don't get that with Wake Med or another non-teaching facility. The best pay/benefits I have ever had was at U of M with their union... I don't see that happening here.

Yes, this certainly IS an old post revived. I've now been working at Duke for 5 months. I work M-F 8-4. I DO pay $55/month to park! I park in the Trent St garage....it may be much less costly for off shifts. I was very lucky to get this parking assignment as the other option would have been quite a distance.
