We arrived in Apex (27523) from Los Angeles about three weeks ago. Our GPS has really saved us. One night my husband and I went out for dinner without it and I don't know where we ended up. It made me very nervous as I remember what can happen in LA if you drive into the "wrong" neighborhood. It seemed to rain the whole first week we were here, too. I also have enjoyed exploring. Also - tell me, have you ever seen so many mini-vans in one place????? It seems like EVERYONE has one. In our neighborhood it seems like 90% of the people have a Town and Country or equivalent and then a Honda Accord or equivalent.

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I and our 14 yo son are planning to make the move next year. So any pointers/suggestions/etc. as you learn your way around would be most helpful. I've been taking notes from this forum and have learned a lot of valuable information. I can't wait to join you all there.

That's Cary/Apex for you--most of the Triangle is not like that.

Default I Like Calling NC 'Home'

WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME!

When I first moved to Cary from coastal NC, and had the time to do it -- after unpacking boxes and setting-up housekeeping -- I would venture-out in the car, and stayed on the Cary Parkway, which runs roughly from one end to the other. As I drove down one side, and then back up the other, I made mental note of the streets/neighborhoods Cary Parkway intersected.

I've been here almost three years now, and get tickled when I realize -- and eventually I do! -- how, in most instances, I have been driving around my elbow to get to my thumb, so-to-speak.

Cary, at least, is well-laid-out, and the streets seem to make some sense. I only get lost in the older, downtown Cary, where some streets tend to wind around, but even then, I will intersect a street whose name I recognize. Rarely, do I feel 'lost' or panic because I have little clue where I am.

You will find your way around. The major roads include Walnut Street, Maynard, Chapel Hill Road/Hwy 54, Tryon Road/US1/64, Harrison Avenue, and if all else fails, I40 will get you to Raleigh, in one direction, or Durham, in the other, or even points further if you have a need to be there, too.

Of course, I was doing all of this driving around when gas was cheaper than $3.50/gallon.

You will also have a lot of good luck, learning the area(s) from your computer and a chair, by searching the Forums here at City Data -- a wealth of great information, photos, maps, links, and a host of incredibly helpful people -- many of whom are just like you, and relatively new to the area, too.

An auto enthusiast term for a Honda with mods(modifications) in appearance and/or performance. A souped up car mainly appealing to younger owners.

I believe the "rice" term is a derogatory Asian reference, since this sort of car modification is said to be a habit of young Asian men, in Southern California, where this term/phenomenon originated?

Actually I believe the "rice" term was rooted in earlier derogatory lingo regarding imported cars and motor cycles, possibly originating with Harley riders grunting about "rice-burner" motorcycles like Suzukis and Kawasakis that had whining high RPM two-stroke engines.
