I really liked Cravin Melon in college. I'll check them out.

REalize that this is not a mega stadium concert. It is a free open air concert in the park, where you can have a beer, bring a picnic, etc. Personally, I could envision packing up the kids and a picnic for a sunny afternoon downtown listening to the Wailers. My kids love reggae!

There's plenty of free, live outdoor music in Durham--not bigtime names like "Brian Howe of Bad Company" (was he even in Bad Company?), but local bands, mostly bluegrass/blues. I like the local vibe better.
Check out the West Village Courtyard on fridays during the summer (6-8), Brightleaf Square Fridays (7-9), Parker and Otis Fridays (6-8), American Tobacco, various dates throughout the summer.

Are you sure about the picnic thing? I thought the whole point of it being free was so they could make money off the food and beverage, thus no bringing in your own.

In my opinion even the bad music is a good time, especially if it is a beautiful night. I had a lot of fun at the couple that I went to last summer... I'm looking forward to EVE 6 this year.

I only went to one last year, and only stopped by for a beer and a stroll on the way somewhere else for dinner, but I remember people with their own small coolers, drinks and food there.
