Hi everyone, I am getting married in August 2009 and am trying on dresses for the first time this weekend. I don't want the typical white, strapless, princess ballgown. The wedding will be outside in a glen in Asheville with the reception in a loft-type space. Does anyone have suggestions (non-David's Bridal--I hate them) for me to try out? Has anyone been to Enchanting Moments in Fuquay? I have an appt tomorrow there.

I'm sorry I am new here so I don't know any bridal shops but I just wanted to say Congratulations! I bet your pictures will be beautiful having a wedding in a glen. The dress shopping is one of the best parts! Good luck on finding your perfect dress and on your wedding!!

Congratulations! I just got married in September. I have heard a lot of negative things about Enchanting Moments unfortunately. I've heard they are very pushy and rude. My #1 advice is don't let anyone talk you into getting a dress...you will know when you find the one YOU want. I also experienced a lot of pushiness from Victorian Rose. They have beautiful gowns but the pushiness from the owner turned me off. There is a cool shop in MacGregor Downs in Cary....they seemed pretty cool. I ended up getting my dress here in Wilmington by a great place called Fontaine's Bridal. There's also a nice bridal shop at North Hills but I think they may be on the pricey side. Good luck and again, congratulations!

I highly recommend the bridal store at the outlets in Smithfield. It was a great place to try on a wide variety of dresses. They didn't play any games with hiding the designer's name, style or anything like that. Anywhere that didn't let me take pictures was also instantly off my list - I really needed to see the pictures and evaluate it at home before settling on one!

I purchased my wedding gown, bridesmaids, mother's gown and rehearsal dress from Enchanting Moments and had a wonderful experience! Several of my co workers had recommended their salon to me. Tip: Make an appointment and talk to them about what you are looking for. They were able to take a couture gown and make changes to it to make it my perfect gown. I hope that you had a pleasant experience and were able to find your gown. Good luck with the wedding.

My fiance purchased her dress at Alexia's Bridal Boutique in Cary. I went with her (gasp!) to pick out the dress, and also to the first fitting (yes, we are attached at the hip). I found the staff to be very nice and extremely helpful. Interestingly enough, most of the people who work there are getting married within the next few months, so they have both perspectives on things.

Of all the bridal shops she looked at, she found Alexia's to be the best in the area. They only potential downside is that they are somewhat expensive ($2,500 - $13,000).

If budget is an issue for anyone, there's a bridal resale consignment shop on Millbrook Rd in Raleigh called A Bridal World. Used to be in Mini-City when I lived there.

Might be worth a look since you can try on as opposed to ebay, etc.

My wife and I got married in Vegas in 1970. Still married. Cost $16 for the license and $25 for the chapel. Amount spent doesn't always govern the duration of the marriage. My cousin's cost $20K in 1969, but didn't last. He actually later decided he was gay, but that's a whole new story.

Best wishes to all you newlyweds and engaged couples.

Congratulations!

I went to Victorian Rose, the Bridal Boutique of Raleigh, and the Bridal Gallery in MacGregor Downs.

Victorian Rose, as stated above, has really pushy sales people. I felt like they didn't let me have my own opinion.

I used the Bridal Boutique for bridesmaids' dresses and shoes, and I cannot recommend them. They never followed up, messed up the order, lost the shoes ... nearly a disaster.

The Bridal Gallery was pretty good. They had a nice selection and the sales people are a lot nicer. HOWEVER ... they dropped the ball two days before my wedding. I took it in to be steamed/pressed and when I went to get it, the cathedral train was all pinned up. I asked to have it let down so I could see it, and the sales people said it was too much trouble. I'm not a pushy person so I let them talk me into leaving it pinned up and leaving. Big mistake. Even though I let the train down that afternoon and let it hang for two straight days, the wrinkles never came out. They had clearly never pressed my dress. I know I should have refused to let them shoo me away without checking it, but they still should have done their job.

I don't know why I had such bad luck with dress shops. I'm not picky, demanding, or difficult. In fact, I'm a quiet pushover. Everything else with my wedding went perfectly with all other vendors!
