A few days before Christmas, DH and I took DD2 to the Reading Terminal in Philadelphia. This is an historic place where vendors have counters and kiosks to sell the most wonderful foods, flowers and products from all over the region. It is like a visit to a Global market - we bought steak from a German butcher for our Christmas Eve dinner, seafood from an Oriental purveyor, bread from the Metropolitan Bakery, poultry from Pennsylvania Dutch, and pignoli cookies from a wonderful Italian bakery called Termini Brothers. I also found a rich, pungent cinnamon in a little gourmet shop. What a wonderful time we had.

Is there a special regional market in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area to buy local foods and favorites such as local baked goods, jams & honey or meat & poultry from a local butcher?

I have heard of Southern Season and Foster's Market, but I don't know (yet )if they have that old time Farmer's Market feeling to them.

I'm especially interested in a place that holds much tradition and memories for people of the Triangle area. Thanks very much!

The State Farmer's Market is in Raleigh, just southwest of downtown. It is run by the state Agriculture Dept., and has seasonal vendors as well as long-term ones. Some have non-produce items such as baked goods, dairy, and horticulture products.

In the summer months, there's a weekly downtown Farmer's market in Raleigh's Moore Square, that specializes on items grown/made near the Triangle area.

Durham's Farmer's Market runs spring thru fall downtown near Central Park.

Weaver Street Market is a cooperative grocery on Weaver Street in downtown Carrboro.
There's also a cooperative grocery in downtown Durham on Chapel Hill Street.

Carrboro Farmer's Market runs Saturdays next to Town Hall.

Southern Season is a large, famous local gourmet shop in Chapel Hill's University Mall.

Foster's Market is another food/market/catering type of place, with a location in Durham and another in Chapel Hill.

Wake Forest has a farmer's market on Saturdays in downtown. Varying amount of vendors...runs April to October or so.
