Hi. I just moved to the Raleigh area from Florida, and I am in need of a good family practice doctor or internist. I have hypothyroidism and trouble sleeping. I need someone who can see to both issues. Thanks.

Try calling Schmidt and Catchings Family Practice, off Kildaire and Tryon Roads, in Cary. Both my husband and I see Dr. Dipen Shah, and we are most impressed with him, and the general practice. Dr. Jennifer Schmidt and her partner seem to do a little of it all, including having a clinic for little ones, across the hall from the main offices and examining rooms.

The staff is friendly, and we have never had a problem getting in to see Dr. Shah. Between the two of us, we have plenty of things for him to track, too -- my husband was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever last Fall, and that has presented quite a few problems, but Dr. Shah has been on top of them. He has worked with both of us on BP issues -- hubby's is a bit high, mine is way too low -- our weight(s), sleep issues, diet and nutrition, and diabetes. He is very knowledgeable, and does his research.

He is also very good with coordinating his care with my cardiologist and neurologist, and keeps track of the meds we take and why. Our INS provider is Blue Cross, and they seem to prefer their insurees working with a PCP who will look after their general health.

Good luck in your search. It's awfully hard when you are 'new.'

Both my husband and I see Dr. Shah over there as well. I just adore him. I haven't had any serious medical problems so I don't know how he is in that aspect (yet) but so far I've really liked how he's handled normal, everyday medical stuff. He also has a very nice bedside manner, he's mild mannered and seems to actually listen.

I use Dr. Jim Jacobs at Cary Medical Group (near Waverly Place) and love him - I have a chronic illness, and both my husband and I have had some bizarre medical issues in the past year, and he's been great at investigating/diagnosing and coordinating care with specialists. I wasn't as impressed with the other doctor in the group the one time I saw someone different, and don't know anything about the rest, but the office is efficient, they have walk-in hours for common, minor illnesses, etc; and I've usually been able to get same-day appointments for other things when needed. Dr. Jacobs will spend a LOT of time with you explaining, etc, if you want him to. They are an internal medicine group, so only see adults - which I prefer to family practice.

We've been using Blue Ridge Family Physicians and have been very happy with them. Beyond offering a wide range of specialties they have very convenient hours and offer a bevy of services on-line that eliminate the need to either wait on the phone or visit the office.

They're also located somewhat central within Raleigh which makes it very easy for us to get to them.
